Nicholas, "oxygen free" at 4 months.
NICHOLAS BAIRD WOELFLE

Unlike his brother, Nick was not overjoyed with the prospect of being born, or arriving
early. He spent most of his pre-birth days tucked very high up against my ribs, and didn't seem to want to venture anywhere else. In fact, when they delivered the boys by cesarean section, they had to pry Nick out of my
rib cage with forceps. The poor little guy was so bruised. Although slightly larger then his brother, Nick was not quite as strong. He was placed on the ventilator as well, but required the use of it for 17 days.
The murmur heard from his PDA was quite loud, and he did not respond to the medication even after three rounds of it. The ligation really appeared to have helped him out, but he soon developed several "collapses" on his right
lung, and spent the next week clinging to life. Once he made the decision to recover, he did so quickly and never looked back. He required a few "top-ups" of Dad's blood when he was anemic, and he developed Stage One
ROP in one eye and Stage Two in the other. The ROP is regressing nicely and will apparently cause him no further difficulties. He has a partially blocked tear duct which gets infected occasionally. The doctors
have told us that he will out grow this problem. His cranial ultrasounds were good, as were the echograms, and abdominal scans. He did develop a urinary tract infection, and after undergoing the VCGU test, it was
discovered that he has a Stage 2 renal reflux.
After 156 days of life, Nick has grown 7.5 inches and weighs 10 lbs., 13 ounces. He now only requires his oxygen at night times, and should be free of all oxygen assistance in
6-8 weeks. Unlike his brother, Nick is more methodical in his approach to life. His facial expressions show that he is very serious, and needs to think out what's going on around him, yet he has the most beautiful smile
and attentive nature... and will win the hearts of many.
