ANDY by Ann Gibson Did you turn to look as we walked along the street? did you notice that our Andy´s so unsteady on his feet? Did you maybe see he has a little bird like face? did you know he´d never win an olympic race? Have you ever thought just what it means to such a child, to have instead of stares, just once a lovely open smile? You may not like to believe it but I tell you it is true, that children like our Andy, well, they do have feelings too! And just because he looks as though he may not understand, that does not mean you could not also take him by the hand. And show a little kindness to a child who´s been denied, all that you just take for granted, as you go on with your life He wants to drive an engine when he´s older, so he´s said, he speaks of dreams he´ll never do as we put him to bed. He has such great big plans and yet he doesn´t even know, the seeds he´s planted in his mind will never ever grow. But of one thing I´m certain and I say this as I´m sure, if you don´t care for Andy then the loss is only yours. He´s opened up our minds, our hearts, in ways we can´t describe, this little boy has really brought some sunshine to our lives. So next time when you see us as we walk along the street, don´t stare and please don´t think that our dear Andy´s only weak. For when he looks at me with those brown eyes so clear and bright, I´m glad that it is me who tucks him into bed at night. He may not be like you and me, but of one thing I´m sure, he loves me in a way that no-ones ever loved me before. So what if he his handicapped that´s the way he´s meant to be, and that´s just how I love him, he means everything to me! Copyright: Ann Gibson, 1994 P.S. I wrote this after a bad reaction from strangers to Andy´s handicap!! Contact Ann Gibson:114227.2315@compuserve.com
